Tennis state playoffs begin to take shape

The Kennesaw Mountain girls team punched its ticket to the Class AAAAAA state playoffs with a 3-0 win over Campbell in the first round of the Region 4-AAAAAA tournament. Samantha Armas and Nicole Croxton scored singles victories before the Mustangs iced the match with a doubles victory from the Mallie McNeel-Samantha Maddin team. … For the second time this season, Walton took out Etowah 5-0 as the Lady Raiders advanced to the championship round of the Region 5-AAAAAA tournament. Walton will next play on April 18. … The Woodstock girls beat Lassiter 3-2 to earn a berth in the state playoffs out of Region 5-AAAAAA. The Wolverines now face Roswell in the semifinals for the right to face Walton. The loser will square off against Etowah for the No. 3 seed. Etowah punched its state playoff ticket with a 3-2 win over Milton in the first round. … On the boys’ side, Woodstock, having beaten Roswell 3-2, will face Milton in one semifinal while Lassiter will meet Walton after the Trojans blanked Etowah 3-0 and Walton whitewashed Cherokee 3-0. … The Region 7-AAAAA tournament begins next week with the top teams from each subregion, Pope and Kell meeting Creekview and Sequoyah in the first round. … The North Gwinnett girls stomped Parkview last week 4-1 as Hannah Serdinia picked up a win at No. 1 singles for the Bulldogs. The victory was the second in as many days for North Gwinnett after the Bulldogs shut out Collins Hill 5-0. Peachtree Ridge, Norcross, Mountain View and Mill Creek also pulled off 5-0 victories last week over fellow Gwinnett programs. The Brookwood boys team saw its winning streak snapped with a 4-1 loss to St. Xavier (Ken.) last Tuesday. David Brown earned Brookwood’s lone point at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Liam Friel. The Broncos will next take the court at the Region 8-AAAAAA tournament. Brookwood (15-3) has lost to just one in-state opponent, Westlake on March 13.
