Thursday football, softball and volleyball scores

On the football field, Meadowcreek went up 6-0 over Brookwood early in the first quarter, but Brookwood took the lead with a 92-yard kick-off return from Junior Eli Khol. Meadowcreek hit again when Senior Desmon Jackson rushed the ball into the end zone from nine yards out to take a 14-7 lead. Three successful field goals from Senior Dylan Schefske gave the Broncos a 16-14 lead with 2:53 left in the half. Before the first half could end, Brookwood capitalized on a Meadowcreek turnover by letting Chris Carter take the ball into the end zone from two yards out and extend the lead to 23-14. Kohl scored again on the ground in the middle of third, while Carter also racked up his second score of the night in the fourth to help fuel a 40-point unanswered scoring spree by the Broncos to secure the region win.

With 3:59 left in the first half of the Mt. Zion-Jonesboro vs. Drew game, the Bulldogs found themselves up 22-6 after a pair of rushing touchdowns from Freshman Tyzay Rogers and Sophomore Montreil Freeman, as well as a touchdown pass from Junior quarterback Tyjauan Rogers to Sophomore Taariik Brett. Drew cut the Bulldogs lead with a 1-yard scoring run from Derionte Kemp, his second of the night, to make it a 22-12 game at the half. Rogers used his legs again to rush for a 3-yard score at the beginning of the third, but Drew’s Kemp was quick to answer with his third and fourth score of the night to make it a 29-26 game, Drew’s smallest deficit since Mt. Zion first scored. Freeman scored his second touchdown of the night to increase the Bulldog’s lead early in the fourth, but Drew chipped away at the lead again to make it 35-33 with :18 left in the game, needing to get an onside kick recovery to go for the win. Drew’s attempt was recovered by the Bulldogs and they held on to win 35-33.

On the softball diamond, Alexander defeated Northgate for the second time this season to claim the region 5-AAAAAA championship and remain undefeated in the region. Senior Audrey Wilbanks smacked an RBI-single to score the winning run and put the Calhoun Yellowjackets on top of Sonoraville 5-4. After moving up three spots in the rankings to the number four spot Commerce continued to roll with a solid 6-2 victory over region opponent George Walton Academy, extending their region record to 12-2. The Loganville Red Devils won a double-header against Buford, winning 4-0 then 6-4 to claim the region 8-AAAAA championship and go undefeated in the region.

On the volleyball court, first in their class Coosa walked away with two 2-0 sweeps over Gordon Central and Kell. The Blessed Trinity Titans also racked up two sweeps over Lovett and Mt. Vernon Presbyterian to surpass the 40-win mark on the season. Class AAA second-ranked Westminster went up against a rolling Riverwood team and bested the Raiders 2-1 for the second time this season. Kennesaw Mountain bounced back after a 3-1 loss to class AAAAAAA second-ranked Lassiter and swept North Cobb 3-0 to pick up their fifth region win of the season.
