Gymnasts from 38 schools took part in the state gymnastics qualifying meet at Lovett over the weekend and the field has been set for this weekend’s state championship meet at Westminster. Tift County scored a 110.15 to come in first at the meet as the Blue Devils are seeking a third state title in a row. Lambert finished second, just ahead of Lassiter with Newnan, Carrollton and Buford rounding out the top six. Seventy girls competed for just 12 spots in order to be eligible for the all-around title at Westminster and some familiar names will duke it out for the title. Tift County’s Beth Roberts finished first in the all-around competition with an impressive 38.975 score, ahead of Lambert’s Katie Stuart. Newnan’s Sydney Goad, Lassiter’s Katie Steele and Buford’s Logan Nugent comprised the top five. Libby Barbour of Tift County qualified in sixth position while Cartersville’s Sydney Barrett, Carrollton’s Kyndel Yett, Maddy Sims of South Forsyth, Bainbridge’s Emily Perkins, Carrollton’s Katie Beth Carter and Mary Katherine Ballow of Lassiter will also compete for the all-around title. … Roberts qualified for individual titles on all-around, vault, bars, beam and floor and could walk away Friday with six total titles. She finished first in beam, vault and bars and third in floor. Goad is a threat to Roberts on floor, where she finished first. Steele and Stuart qualified in all four events and could challenge Roberts. Barbour will compete individually on vault and bars as well as all-around. Tatum Lamb qualified for beam and will compete on all events for Tift County in the team competition. Buford could make some noise on bars while Carrollton has plenty of firepower on beam. Lassiter boasts three contenders on floor with Alyssa Varsalona and Ballow joining Steele. Lassiter, Cartersville and Tift County each have three competitors going on vault.
