Marietta senior Mary Nesmith hit another career milestone over Spring Break at the Arcadia Invitational in the 3200 meter and set the new state record with a 10:15.89 finish. The four-time state champion beat the previous record of 10:16.05 and as a result was listed as a nominee for the girls Track and Field Performer of the Week. Any other week, Nesmith would be the obvious choice for that distinction, however, at the same event North Cobb standout Jasmine Robinson earned her own nomination in the 300 meter hurdle. Robinson—who already had the state record, broke her own record with a 39.81.
South Cobb’s Oluwatosin Awoleye competed in the 800 meter race at the 8th annual Spring Break Showdown at Marietta High School and clocked a 2:04.37 for another new state record. The state of Georgia has also seen some of the fastest relay times in history this season and Heritage-Conyers posted a 1:37.09 at the Spring Break Showdown for a first place finish and the sixth-fastest time in state history. Additionally, Landmark Christian represented the state down at the Florida relays and clocked a 3:44.03 for the seventh fastest time.
On the boys side, Starr’s Mill’s Jared Moore strengthened his case for being one of the best field athletes in the country. At the Spring Break Showdown, Moore swept the Shot Put and Discus with a 58-10 and 189-5 throw. Gage Voyles continued his tremendous senior season with a first-place finish in the Before the Break meet in the high jump with a 6-10. Westlake—which is fresh off its sweep of Fulton County championships had a strong showing at the Beach Run Invitational that was hosted at Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach, SC over the break. In the 100 meter, Kenan Walton clocked a blazing 10.32 for the ninth fastest time in state history.
The Westlake relay team—which includes Kenan—also outpaced the field in the 4×100 relay and took a top finish with a 40.70. Effingham County senior Dakarai Walker earned a first-place finish at the Tiger Home Meet in the 200 meter dash with a 20.93 finish. The other nominee for athlete of the week was North Atlanta’s Keayari Lee—who took a first-place finish in the 800 meter race at the Spring Break Showdown with his time of 1:52.
