Troup rides a complete game to win, survives three-game series for first-ever state title

The Troup County Tigers and Cherokee Bluff Bears needed a third game to determine the Class 3A state champion after a 5-1 Tigers victory in Game 1 and a commanding 15-0 win for the Bears in Game 2.

Davis Moncus got the start for the Tigers in Game 3 and he was greeted by the Bears with a three-run first inning as Ethan England and Kaden Thompson both had runs batted in, while the other run was from a wild pitch that allowed Landon Kemp to score.

Troup got two of those runs back in the bottom of the first from RBIs by Carson Walker and Fisher Baltzell. Moncus scored on the triple by Baltzell which made the score 3-2 Cherokee Bluff.

Moncus settled in after that rough first inning as he only allowed two hits through the second and third innings, and forced three Cherokee Bluff batters to fly out.

The bottom of the third was a dynamic inning for the Tigers that started with a one-out double by Moncus who later advanced to third base after a wild pitch by Bubba Coleman. Walker recorded another RBI with a single up the middle. Then, after a single by Baltzell and a walk by Brady Willis, the Tigers scored a pair after a triple down the right field line by Chase Mosley, entering the fourth inning with a 5-3 lead.

The Tigers added another run to the scoreboard in the fourth as Walker picked up his third RBI of the game with a single to left field, bringing home Torreion Delaney.

Troup was superb this season as they posted a record of 32-9 and a 14-2 record in Region 2-3A. But the championship was the proper bookend.

“Just winning that state championship is an amazing feeling”, Walker said. “I’m just very proud of all of my teammates.”

“It was super fun”, Mosley said. “Just putting the work in this whole year and just practicing with the teammates, just building that bond and going to win a state championship, it feels great.”

This moment is huge for the entire team and for the school, and head coach Thomas Glisson shows how good this moment feels for everyone.

“It’s been a long time coming for Troup High School,” Glisson said. “We love everybody and these guys did one heck of a job.”
