Tuesday region tournament recap

Teams across the state began punching their tickets to the state tournament as the second round of the region tournaments took place Tuesday. Let’s take a look at what took place across each classification.

Class AAAAAAA: For the boys, Cherokee defeated Woodstock 65-53 and will face No. 1 Roswell on Thursday. Lowndes beat Colquitt County in a Region 1 game 64-57. Lowndes will face Camden County on Thursday. In Region 2, Wheeler beat Campbell 60-46 and Westlake defeated Newnan 68-55. Wheeler will face No. 1 East Coweta on Friday. Westlake will play Pebblebrook, the two seed, on Friday. For the girls, Tift County defeated Camden County in a Region 1 game. Senior Destiny Johnson led with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Jamia Level scored 13 points with 11 rebounds. Senior Kiesha Jackson added 10 points. Freshman Shakiria Chaney netted nine points and sophomore Cali Conner scored five points with five rebounds.

Class AAAAAA: For the boys, Mundy’s Mill defeated M.L. King 64-49 in a Region 4 game. Rayquan Brown led with 14 points. Jordan Black scored 13 points. Demarcus Fannin and Chris Lango each scored 10 points. Valdosta beat Northside-Warner Robins 67-63 and will face top-seeded Coffee on Thursday.  For the girls, Dalton defeated Allatoona 59-40.

Class AAA: For the boys, Westside-Macon defeated Pike County 86-30 behind an 18-point performance from Des Foston in a Region 4 game. Foston added nine rebounds, three steals and three assists. Jay Mosley scored 17 points with three rebounds. Kowacie Reeves Jr. added 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Jonta Balkcom netted 13 points with four assists, three rebounds and three steals. In another Region 4 game, fifth seed Jackson defeated fourth seed Rutland 62-58. Jackson will face top-seeded Central-Macon on Thursday. Jefferson defeated Jackson County in a Region 8 game 55-33. Jacob Radaker led with 16 points and Donsha Gaither scored 12 points. For the girls, Dawson County defeated Fannin County 64-61 in a Region 7 game. Kaylee Sticker scored 23 points in the victory which allowed her 1,500+ points in her career. Maddie Anglin added 14 points for the Tigers. Marlie Townley scored nine points, Anna Lowe netted five points and Sophia D’Oliveira and Rachel Swafford each scored three points. Monroe Area, the six seed from Region 8, defeated Morgan County, the three seed, 43-41. Monroe Area will face #2 Hart County on Thursday.

Class AA: For the boys, fourth seed Brooks County defeated fifth seed Fitzgerald 51-45, putting them in a tough Thursday matchup against a top seeded Early County team that has beaten the Trojans twice already this year. In region 3, fifth seed Southwest-Macon upset fourth seed Bleckley County 46-35. The Patriots now await their Thursday matchup against top-ranked Northeast-Macon, who served them a near 20-point loss during their last meeting. For the girls, seven seed St. Vincent’s upset six seed Toombs County 48-43. Up next for the Saints is a Wednesday matchup in region 2 against third seed Woodville-Tompkins. In region 8, second seed Banks County served Social Circle an 80-31 loss, advancing the Leopards to a Thursday matchup against six seed Elbert County following a 57-48 win over Putnam County.

Class A: For the boys, third seed Lakeview Academy bested sixth seed Tallulah Falls 65-42 to advance to the next round where the Lions will face-off against the winner of the Athens Academy and George Walton game. Fueling the offense was Adam Cottrell who put up a double-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals, while Blake McIntyre led the team with 17 points. A 20-point first-quarter performance from Galloway proved to be enough for the Scots to narrowly defeat Mt. Vernon Presbyterian 55-54. For the girls, top seeded Georgia Military soundly defeated Twiggs county 71-37, scoring the same amount of total points for Twiggs County in the first half of the game.
