Two-time defending champion Carrollton tops talent in Division I, host Lumpkin leads Division II GHSA girls wrestling field

Carrollton won the first two girls team duals champions in 2023 and 2024 and after exponential growth of the sport, the GHSA expanded the event to two divisions which will award state championships Saturday at Lumpkin County.

The eight-team, double-elimination tournament is divided into two divisions and the Division I bracket consists of the higher-classed schools while the Division II bracket features the best of the smaller schools. Teams will weigh in at 8 a.m. and begin the Round of 8 at 9 a.m. to begin the day-long trek to the championship.

Teams which lose in the first few rounds will drop to the consolation bracket and wrestle for a chance at third or fourth place.

Two-time defending champion Carrollton opens the tournament against Shiloh while Gainesville will wrestle McEachern, Greenbrier will face Campbell and Pope will meet Richmond Hill.

Carrollton moved past Evans 66-12 in the prelims while Shiloh outlasted River Ridge 47-36 to earn a championship berth. Gainesville moved past Tift County 42-35 and its first-round opponent, McEachern, defeated South Gwinnett 49-30. Greenbrier beat Newnan 72-12 in the prelims and Campbell, Greenbrier’s first-round opponent, beat Morrow 45-33 to earn a berth in the finals. Pope defeated Woodward Academy 45-30 and its first-round opponent, Richmond Hill, beat Jackson County in a 42-42 tiebreaker.

In the Division II bracket, host Lumpkin County will open the day against Hardaway. Lumpkin beat Burke County 66-17 in the prelims while Hardaway enjoyed a bye.

Oglethorpe County defeated Ridgeland 60-18 in the prelims and will wrestle Long County after it beat North Oconee 48-36. Chestatee beat Brantley County 54-26 in the prelims and will face Gilmer after its forfeit victory against Mount Zion-Jonesboro. LaFayette earned a 1-0 forfeit victory against Luella and will challenge Jordan after the team enjoyed a bye in the prelims.
