
The GHSA Track and Field championships got off to a soggy start at four locations around the state – Rome’s Barron Stadium, Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany, East Jackson High School and Carrollton High School.
Rain impacted the finish of the opening day in Albany, where Classes A-Division II and 3A were competing and there is hope for calmer weather for Saturday’s finals at each of the four sites.
The 3A and A-Division II team standings are incomplete but currently in Class 3A, the Jefferson girls lead with 30.5 points ahead of North Hall (27.25) and Liberty County (27). On the boys side, Sandy Creek has 43 points and leads Calhoun (37) and Jefferson (26). In Class A-Division II, Claxton’s girls lead with 52 points ahead of Metter (39.63) and Elite Scholars (30). On the boys side, Mitchell County and McIntosh County Academy are tied with 23 points each ahead of Warren County (20 points).
In the state’s new-look highest class (6A) competing at Carrollton, Buford’s girls lead the competition in Carrollton with 35 points ahead of Marietta (30), Cherokee (21), Harrison (20) and Etowah (18). On the boys side, host Carrollton is well out in front with 66 points ahead of Marietta (25) and North Atlanta, Buford and Collins Hill (14).
Also in Carrollton, the Athens Academy girls are atop the Class 1A-3A Private standings with 44.50 points ahead of GAC (36), Wesleyan (27.5) and Trinity Christian (27). On the boys side, there is a tight race at the top with Hebron Christian’s 32 points leading Athens Academy (30), Trinity Christian (28). Holy Innocents’ (27.5) and Whitefield Academy (26). In the adapted event, Starr’s Mill’s girls lead with 10 points ahead of Gordon Central (8) and Calhoun (6). On the boys side, Calhoun leads with 10 points.
In Class 5A at Barron Stadium, Pope’s girls top the standings with 40 points and lead Chamblee (26), Rome (21) and Chattahoochee and Dunwoody (16). On the boys side, Greenbrier leads the standings with 34 points ahead of Langston Hughes (29), Loganville (27) and Alexander (15).
Also at Barron Stadium, Bremen’s girls stand alone atop the Class A-Division I standings with 53 points and lead Vidalia (32), Banks (28), Bleckley County (26), Fannin (24) and Model (22). On the boys side, Bleckley leads with 29 points ahead of Commerce (20), Bremen (17) and Model, Swainsboro and East Laurens (16).
At East Jackson, the Harris County girls scored 36 points to narrowly lead Westminster (35), Cambridge (34) and Pace Academy, Central (24). For the boys, Starr’s Mill scored 35 points and leads Walnut Grove (25), Cartersville (24) and Marist, Mays (18).
Also at East Jackson, Shaw’s girls top Class 2A with 28 points and lead Sonoraville (25), Columbus, Savannah (21), Miller Grove (20.5) and Rockmart (20). On the boys side, Franklin County leads with 34 points ahead of KIPP (27), East Jackson (25.5) and Hart County (24).
