Week 9 Girls Basketball Rankings

Westlake notched a tournament win in the Peach State Classic over the holidays.

Westlake retains the top spot in Class AAAAAAA as its only loss came over the holidays to Mercer County, the top-ranked team in Kentucky. Collins Hill stays No. 2; the Lady Eagles have only lost to Holy Innocents’, Georgia’s top overall team per MaxPreps’ computer rankings, and Riverdale (Tenn.), the site’s No. 3 ranked team nationally. Hillgrove supplants North Cobb in the rankings and takes the No. 1 spot.

Lovejoy zoomed up the rankings over the past month and seized the No. 1 spot with a marquee win over Buford last week, perhaps the best victory of any Class AAAAAA contender so far this year. Harrison and Winder-Barrow check in at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Creekview breaks into the rankings for the first time after a blowout win over previously ranked Sequoyah.

The top six in Class AAAAA did not budge, and No. 6 Villa Rica has been on a particularly impressive run to maintain its status in the rankings. The Wildcats outpaced Rome 66-51 and are alone at the top of the Region 7-AAAAA standings. No. 1 Buford opened the New Year with a Jan. 2 loss to Lovejoy (55-49) in the Big South Shootout but has reeled off four straight wins, including Tuesday’s 55-17 victory over Loganville that moved the Wolves to 6-0 in Region 8-AAAAA play.

Class AAAA No. 1 Carver-Columbus opened Region 1-AAAA action last week with an 89-41 win over Cairo, and the only loss for the 16-1 Tigers came in their out-of-state matchup with Alabama’s No. 2 ranked Ramsay Rams. Unbeaten Henry County (16-0) still sits at No. 2, and the rest of the poll mirrors last week’s standings.

Top-ranked Beach controls Class AAA again this week. Second-ranked GAC will be searching for answers after losing its leading scorer, Robyn Benton, to an ACL injury over the holiday break. The Lady Spartans feature plenty of scorers and should be able to weather the storm.

Top-ranked Laney has been lighting up the scoreboard, protecting its No. 1 spot. Dodge County made a jump to second, and third-ranked Putnam County has been rolling.

With only one loss on the season to Carver-Columbus, Georgia’s 15th-ranked overall team according to MaxPreps, Greenville is on top of Class A-Public. Telfair County moved down to No. 2 and will hit the road for the next three games, including a matchup against a solid Wilcox County. Pelham soundly defeated Cairo 51-37, inching them past a rising Macon County and into the No. 3 spot.

Holy Innocents’ reaffirmed its powerhouse status team after taking down No. 2 Wesleyan, making the Lady Golden Bears the clear option as top dogs of Class A-Private. Wesleyan holds onto the No. 2 spot, bouncing back after its loss to Holy Innocents’ with two wins, including a 61-24 win over Paideia. Our Lady of Mercy’s only loss of the season was in its first game, but OLM has been tearing through the competition ever since. Its 54-44 win over Alabama’s 24th-ranked (MaxPreps) Tuscaloosa Academy shows promise for the remaining season.
