Wesleyan baseball looks for revenge against Lovett

Lovett and Wesleyan will face off on Thursday, as the two top-six seeds are set to battle. The two teams are among the most successful programs over the past 25 years, with the pair combining for 10 championships during that time.

Lovett is the higher-seeded team and has a dominant 27-5 record this season. In addition to the Lions’ great season, they have won 27 of their past 29 games. The Lions have had one of the best offenses in the state this year, scoring 9.2 runs per game. However, their pitching and defense have been hit or miss this season. The team has shut out 11 opponents but has also given up five or more runs eight times, including both of its playoff games so far this postseason.

On the other hand, Wesleyan has had a very good season. The team finished with a 17-7 record but struggled at the end, losing two of its final three games and both of its last region games. However, in the playoffs, they have been unbelievably dominant, outscoring opponents 36-3 in the team’s four playoff games. The last series against Walker was particularly impressive. After the Wolverines upset Fellowship Christian in the first round, they looked like a potential threat. However, the Wolves dominated, winning 12-0 in Game 1 and 7-1 in Game 2.

This is not the schools’ first postseason meeting in this year’s spring sports playoffs. In the girls’ soccer playoffs, the Lions and Wolves faced off as two top-five seeds, with Wesleyan being the No. 4 seed and Lovett the No. 5 seed. The Wolves were looking to capture their first championship since 2019, while Lovett was aiming to repeat as champion. The Lions dominated the matchup, outscoring the higher-seeded Wesleyan 8-1.

The Wesleyan baseball team will look to get revenge on Lovett but will need strong outings on the mound to have a chance to win. Lovett, on the other hand, will need a typical offensive performance to take pressure off the pitching rotation and secure a victory.
