West Forsyth girls, Lambert boys top Division 3 lacrosse championships

Division 3 – Boys Lambert 12, South Forsyth 0

The Division 3boys lacrosse championship trophy is heading back to Lambert after the Longhorns dominated county rival South Forsyth for the second time this season, coming away victorious in a 12-0 game.

The victory cemented the program as a dynasty and gave the team its third championship in five seasons.

The last two seasons saw Lambert’s championship hopes end in defeat, with losses to West Forsyth in 2023 and Buford in 2024, in the final game of the year. This year, they left no doubt, dominating from game one to the title, finishing a perfect 22-0. The Longhorns took control from the opening faceoff, ending the first quarter up 3-0. The floodgates really opened in the second quarter, with the team scoring six goals to head into halftime up 9-0. The Longhorns went up by ten early in the third, triggering a running clock. Lambert added two more goals before the end of the quarter and used the fourth to give their seniors playing time, in their final high school game. Lambert was led by Cole Greenfield, who scored five goals and was nearly unstoppable all day. In addition Brooks Wehman added two goals along with multiple assists in the Longhorns victory.

South Forsyth had an impressive run to the finals, but their elite defense wasn’t quite stout enough for the Longhorns’ offense. The War Eagles’ best chance to score came at the end of the third quarter, when they had two strong shots on goal, both missing just wide. South Forsyth will return much of its roster next year and will look to avenge this loss, just as Lambert did this season.

Division 3 – Girls – West Forsyth 16, Walton 7

The third time’s the charm for West Forsyth, as the Wolverines hoist the division three girls lacrosse state championship trophy for the first time ever. After falling in back-to-back finals to Milton in 2023 and 2024, the Wolverines let out some frustration, putting the game into a running clock halfway through the third quarter after taking a 14-4 lead. They would go on to claim victory with a score of 16-7.

The game looked like it would be an offensive shootout through the first half of the first quarter, with both teams scoring on their first three possessions. However, the Raiders did not score again for nearly 24 minutes, not until the midpoint of the third quarter. In that time, West Forsyth scored 11 of the next 12 goals to put the game out of reach.

The Wolverines were led by Bryn Birkholz and Luca Diehl, who both scored five goals in the game. West Forsyth is poised to be just as successful next year, losing only five seniors. Among the returners are both Birkholz and Diehl, a junior and freshman, respectively.

On the other side of the field, Walton is still searching for its first title in the three division era, having not won a championship since 2016. The Raiders will see a lot of continuity, losing just five seniors, including returning their leading scorer in the championship game, Brooke Friend, who had two goals.
