Tuesday Roundup: Federer falls Pats survive, Rivers leads Chargers

The top-ranked male tennis player in the world was on his way to winning the second set to take a 2-0 set lead in the finals of the US Open yesterday when technology stepped in the way. Roger Federer led 5-4 and was serving at 30-30 when Juan Martin del Potro hit a passing shot initially called out then was ruled in by replay. Juan del Potro would go on to break Federer, win the set and then take the fourth and fifth sets to claim his first major title.Federer was attempting to become the first person since Bill Tilden in the 1920s to win six straight US Open titles. With the Argentine's win, del Potro became the first player to knock off both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the same slam event. He took out Nadal Sundayin the semis and then rallied to beat FedererMonday.

The Buffalo Bills seemingly had the Patriots cooked Monday night as both teams open their seasons, but an eleven point fourth quarter lead was wiped awaywith :50 left and New England edged the Bills 25-24. Tom Brady found former UGA TE Ben Watson twice in the fourth quarter including the game-winner with under one minute to play, and for the game, Brady was 39-53 for 378 yards. Randy Moss was a big target for Brady as he snared 12 balls for 141 yards while TO for Buffalo was held to just two catches for 46 yards. The biggest play of the game was when, with the Bills clinging to just a 24-19 lead, KR Leodis McKelvin was stripped and the Pats recovered on the Buffalo 31, leading to the game-winning drive.

The San Diego Chargers extended the franchise's personal winning streak over the Oakland Raiders to twelve games last night in a 24-20 win to open up the season. Philip Rivers led the Chargers on an 89-yard game-winning drive which was capped off by Darren Sproles' five yard touchdown run with :18 left. LaDainian Tomlinson turned an ankle on a fumble in the first half andmissed most of the second half, forcing Rivers to Rivers to complete the comeback without the stud running back.

Finally, thanks to a run to the quarterfinals at the US Open, Marietta-native Melaine Oudin climbed to No.44 in the world rankings. Oudin was No.70 entering the Open and will next compete at the end of the month in Japan. The Atlanta Braves will also welcome Oudin as she will throw out the first pitch on Saturday.
