Carver-Columbus first-year head coach Jarvis Jones’ career has come full circle, beating Hapeville Charter 24-7 in the 2A championship game. The now two-time state champion, once as a player and once as a coach, leaves him as one of the few to do so and possibly the most well-renowned individual to ever accomplish it.

The Class of 2009 Carver graduate helped the Tigers win their first state championship in 2007. The Tigers were on a 19-season playoff drought prior to coach Dell McGee taking over in 2005. Jones was a major part of the rise of the Carver program, helping them make the playoffs three times, reaching at least the semifinals in each appearance, and of course, winning the 2006 3A title.

Jones was a four-star recruit, according to 247Sports, and a top-50 player in the country. Originally signing to play for USC, he transferred to Georgia a year later, eventually becoming a two time All-American and the No. 17 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

After that, he spent time with his former head coach, Dell McGee, on the coaching staff at Georgia before taking the Carver job. The Tigers went 15-0 under coach Jones in 2025. This makes him part of the only two undefeated Carver teams and two of the program’s three state championship teams.

The question now is whether the Tigers can win three straight. They have the talent, with players like 2029 running back Zach Watts, 2028 defensive lineman Kingston Brown, and 2027 offensive lineman Terrance Warren, all three or four-star recruits, who are projected to play Power Four football when they graduate high school.
