The GHSA has the proposed classifications for the 2026-2028 reclassification. The most notable change will be the end of the Class A split. However, it is mostly semantics. There are still only seven classifications. Classes A DI and up will be moved up one classification. The reality is that most schools will likely return to the classification they spent most of the 2010s in.
Another interesting aspect is the size of many of the state's schools. Brookwood is once again the state's largest school, with 3802 students. Gwinnett County is home to many of the largest schools in the state. Of the nine schools with over 3,000 students, five are in Gwinnett County, while no other county has more than one. On the other end of the spectrum, Calhoun County is the smallest football-playing school in the state with 112 students. Having a roster of 20 kids, according to MaxPreps, that means that nearly 18 percent of the student body plays football, and if we assume a 50/50 male-female split at the school, nearly 36 percent of the male students at the school play on the football team.
When looking at the teams being reclassed they will have till November 9 to appeal their placement. Most appeals will be to move down in class, while a few will be schools looking to move up to a higher classification. Appeals will be heard by the GHSA on Monday November 10. The new Regions will be released in the coming weeks as the GHSA and its member schools prepare for the next two years of high school sports.
