The GHSA is considered 18 region appeals Monday morning at the association’s offices in Thomaston in what are lateral moves within each school’s respective classifications. Additionally, the association heard a proposal from Loren Maxwell, whose rankings model could have been used for selecting playoff teams beginning next season.
Maxwell produces what is known as the Maxwell ratings for the AJC, which utilize computer simulations of each team’s season one million times and produces a relatively accurate overall outcome of the matchups. After hearing the proposal, the GHSA decided to stick with the PSR, or Postseason Rankings Formula, to seed the playoff brackets for 3A and down.
Next season, each of the state’s classifications will utilize the formula, where region finishes do not matter, aside from the league champion being guaranteed a top-16 spot in the seedings process and each team is rated by the formula.
Below are the appeals that were heard Monday morning before Maxwell’s presentation.
