Elbert County added its name to the list of programs that have made offseason hires, grabbing former Archer head coach, Andy Dyer to take over the program.
The Blue Devils announced the hire in December of 2024 after Shannon Jarvis move to become an Assistant Superintendent with the Elbert County Board of Education. Dyer spent 13 seasons at Archer, accumulating a 97-52 record and four region championships during his time with the Tigers. He was the first coach in Archer football program history.
In his long-tenure at Archer, Dyer made the postseason 10 times including two trips to the semi-finals and one to the state championship in 2014 before losing to Colquitt County, 28-24 in the 2014 Class 6A state championship. Dyers Tigers finished with double-digit wins in five seasons including a 12-1 record in 2017 before losing to Colquitt County once again, this time in the quarterfinals.
During his time at Archer, Dyer had the opportunity to coach a handful of NFL talent that made their way to playing on Sundays. Former Clemson Tiger and Dallas Cowboy cornerback, Andrew Booth Jr. as well as former UNC Tar Heel and current New York Giants offensive lineman Joshua Ezeudu made their way from Archer Community Stadium to the big leagues. Booth was selected in the second round by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2022 NFL Draft at pick No. 42 while Ezeudu was picked by the New York Giants in the third round of the same draft with the No. 67 overall selection.
Before helping the Archer football program get off and running, Dyer served as an assistant coach to Jarvis at Mill Creek from 2004 to 2009 where the Hawks saw their first playoff berth in program history in 2007.
As a player, Dyer attended Brookwood High School where he played his high school football for legendary Georgia high school football head coach, Dave Hunter.
Dyer also helped coach Brookwood for seven seasons from 1997-2004, serving in an assistant role. Fast forward to 2025, Dyer is taking over a Blue Devils program that has made the quarterfinals the last two seasons as well as have made the postseason for the last 12 seasons in a row. Dyer and the Blue Devils will be seeking the programs first state championship since the 1995 season under T. McFerrin that saw the Blue Devils finish 14-1 on the year.
