Gainesville to file court injunction Wednesday to fight GHSA ruling

The courts are closed for Thursday and Friday, narrowing Gainesville’s time to file an injunction to revert the ruling that upheld the suspensions of 35 players by the GHSA.

“That narrows the window a bit,” a representative from Gainesville said.

Posts on social media platforms like X and Facebook described the injunction papers as having ‘been filed’, however the Gainesville rep says that is not the case.

“Yeah, I saw posts with people saying they’d been filed,” they said. “And you are about the seventh person who has called asking about the papers and that they couldn’t find them. That is because they haven’t been filed.”

Before uttering a prophetic, “yet.”

The suspensions stemmed from the fight between Gainesville, the No. 4-ranked team in Class 5A, and Brunswick in the second-round playoff contest whereafter the Red Elephants were punished with the suspensions of 39 players. Gainesville was leading 42-0 late in the third quarter when the fight occurred.

Brunswick was served a postseason ban for one year and fined. When the GHSA rescinded the suspensions of only four players – leaving 35 sidelined for the quarterfinals against No. 2-ranked Langston Hughes – Gainesville’s concern ramped up. When asked what the plan is, the rep was clear of the tall task ahead.

“We have a game Friday and there is a lot to do until then,” they said.
