Cherokee Bluff senior quarterback Brooks Brien has committed to play for Wingate University. He chose Wingate over four other offers, including North Greenville and the University of the Cumberlands.
Brien is coming off the most prolific passing season in Cherokee Bluff history.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound quarterback threw for 2,758 yards and 29 touchdowns, adding six more touchdowns on the ground. He set the schools single-season records for passing yards and passing touchdowns, surpassing Sebastian Irons marks of 1,442 yards set in 2020 and 16 passing touchdowns set in 2021. He finished just one touchdown short of tying Irons career record of 31 passing touchdowns.
While Brien began his career at Cherokee Bluff, he spent the 2023 season at Bethlehem Christian, where he helped lead the Knights to an undefeated regular season and a quarterfinal appearance in the GIAA AAAA-AAA playoffs. He started every game helping the knights averaged over 40 points per game.
He returned home for his senior year, he took over as the starting quarterback for Cherokee Bluff, leading the Bears to their second-best regular season in school history and securing the programs first two wins over ranked opponents. The team advanced to its first-ever quarterfinal appearance, defeating Luella in a hard-fought 21-14 second-round matchup before falling to region rival Jefferson in a competitive quarterfinal game.
Brien joins a Wingate team coming off a 9-2 season and a Division II playoff appearance. The Bulldogs have been one of the most consistent programs in DII, winning at least eight games every season since 2015. He will reunite with other former Hall County players, including West Halls Jaden White and Flowery Branchs Dylan Setzer. With Wingate searching for a new starting quarterback in 2024, and no returning player having thrown more than 10 passes or for more than 40 yards last season, Brien will have an opportunity to compete for the starting job immediately.
