Carver Atlanta’s starting quarterback Corey Fletcher has had a big start to his high school career and as one of the growing numbers of sophomore quarterbacks starting on Fridays, he is helping lead the No. 4-ranked Panthers back to form.
Fletcher is 30-of-44 passing for 621 yards and eight touchdowns in the first four games of the season with half of his touchdown passes going to senior Terrious Favors.
Standing at 6-foot-1 and 160-pounds, Fletcher is your typical young quarterback and shows quality decision-making. If he puts on some more muscle and continues to grow as a player, he could become a highly recruited prospect.
Carver is coming off a rebound season in 2024 that saw the team make the second round of the playoffs after nearly missing out in 2023. The Panthers have outscored their four opponents 152-21, including victories against Decatur 37-14 and Southwest DeKalb 12-7. Carver is coming off a 68-0 victory against Mundy’s Mill on Sept. 5 and is entering its bye-week, next playing at Washington on Sept. 18.
As in previous seasons, Region 5 is going to be a dogfight once again. Hapeville Charter, while 0-2, will challenge any team for the region crown with some elite talent. The Class A-3A Private schools of No. 9 Lovett and No. 6 Holy Innocents’ will also have a say in who wins the region.
Holy Innocents’ looks to have turned the page and is once again a contender with an elite group of underclassmen. Lovett is a traditional power that is never an easy out. Through four games, the Lions are 3-1 with two big wins over Pace Academy and Crisp County. Lovett’s defense is its main strength, giving up only 31 points through four games.
It will be interesting to see how Carver deals with the competition in Region 5. With so many high-end teams, Carver will have its work cut out to win its first region title since 2017.
