Callaway’s Kaiden James may have been the most impressive player from the opening day of the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic. The junior wide receiver clearly commanded the respect of Prince Avenue Christian, with the Wolverines playing soft coverage and conceding short to medium gains, often five yards or more, just to prevent the deep ball.
Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 190 pounds, James has exploded onto the recruiting scene. Already viewed as an FBS prospect, he has recently added offers from Auburn and Alabama. Auburn, in particular, will be a program to watch in his recruitment, the Tigers’ campus is less than an hour from Callaway High School, and the last major recruit from the school, Tank Bigsby, also chose to stay close to home by signing with Auburn.
In game one, James caught five passes for 78 yards and drew the bulk of the defensive attention in the passing game, which helped open up rushing lanes for quarterback Blake Harrington and running back Christon Kennedy.
As the season progresses and the Cavaliers face more true 2A programs, and more 2A-caliber defensive backs, James will emerge as one of the biggest receiving threats in the classification. Without the private schools in the mix, he may even be the most talented wideout in all of 2A. With his combination of size, and speed, James gives Callaway and Harrington a game-changing weapon that eases pressure on the rest of the offense. If the Cavaliers make a run towards a state championship, expect James’ name to be mentioned early and often in 2025.
