Class 6A Blog: Region 1 returns from Fall Break with trio of matchups

There are 26 total matchups on the Week 11 schedule in Class 6A with one Thursday showdown and one on Saturday. Thursday’s game will feature Etowah and North Cobb out of Region 5 and the Saturday game will be played between Region 4’s Rockdale County and Newton. Both of these contests will impact the region standings and this blog will address those after breaking down Region 1-3.

Region 1 is back from a region-wide bye week after fall break. As it currently stands, Lowndes is at the top of the six-team region with a 3-0 overall record. The Vikings will travel to Richmond Hill—which is joined by Valdosta and Colquitt County as 2-1 teams. Valdosta will travel to Tift County and the Blue Devils are in a tie with Camden County at 0-3. Those teams will meet next week. So far, Valdosta lost to Colquitt County, Richmond Hill lost to Valdosta and Colquitt County lost to Lowndes. That means that Lowndes can secure the region title this week with a win over Richmond Hill and a Valdosta loss to Tift County because Lowndes and Valdosta will be closing out the season in the Winnersville Classic. Valdosta has a 52-10 all-time record against Tift County and has won three-straight against the Blue Devils.

In Region 2, Carrollton is off on a bye week at 9-0 overall and 3-0 in region play. The Trojans will face Douglas County next week for the Region 2 championship. This week, Douglas County will host Chapel Hill and East Coweta will have a home game against Westlake. The winner of Westlake and Chapel Hill could earn the No. 3 seed in the playoffs. As for Chapel Hill, the Panthers already lost to Westlake last week and so they would need a Westlake victory over East Coweta and a victory over the Indians next week to earn a possible No. 4 seed.  

Class 6A had six remaining undefeated teams heading into Week 10, but McEachern scored a 35-14 win over Hillgrove to shrink that number to five. Now, McEachern will host South Cobb and Hillgrove will look to bounce back against Harrison. The winner of the Harrison and Hillgrove game will likely earn the No. 2 seed. A McEachern win over South Cobb would crown the Indians the Region 3 title before their season finale at Osborne.

In Region 4, Grayson will close out the season with South Gwinnett and Archer. The Rams can clinch the region title with a win over South Gwinnett and an Archer loss to Heritage-Conyers. Archer’s region loss came to Newton 42-35. Last week, Archer scored a critical 24-7 win over South Gwinnett, but needs Newton to fall this Saturday to Rockdale County or against South Gwinnett next week to jump Newton for a possible No. 2 seed due to the tie-breaker going in Newton’s favor.

Region 5’s Marietta was on a well-deserved bye after its 36-35 comeback win over North Cobb and now have Cherokee and North Paulding remaining on their schedule. Meanwhile, West Forsyth leads a crowded Region 6 standings with two games left. North Gwinnett can secure the Region 7 crown this Friday against Norcross. In Region 8, Buford and Mill Creek will play for the region title next week.
