Class A Div. II Blog: Jenkins County and Lincoln County meet for first-ever top 10 showdown

Class A Div. II will have a total of 50 matchups to watch this week and Lincoln County is set to open its season after last week’s bye. The Red Devils were ranked No. 4 in the preseason, but jumped up to No. 1 after all three of the teams ahead of them in the poll dropped their openers. Previous No. 1 Bowdon fell 26-0 to Fellowship Christian, preseason No. 2 ranked Brooks County fell 35-7 to Thomasville and preseason No. 3 ranked Irwin County dropped a 48-0 loss to Fitzgerald. Lincoln County’s opponent this week is Jenkins County and the Eagles were one of just two teams in the preseason top 10 that won this past week. Jenkins County entered the season as the No. 9 ranked team in the poll and scored a 28-7 win over Glascock County. No. 7 ranked Trion exited the poll and preseason No. 8 Clinch County won 25-6 over Bacon County resulting in Clinch moving up to No. 7 this week and Jenkins County jumping up one slot to No. 8.

Jenkins County and Lincoln County will meet for the eighth time in their respective histories tonight and Jenkins County is 0-7 in all of the previous meetings. This is the first time in any of the meetings that Jenkins County and Lincoln County will both be ranked at the time of kickoff and it will be a tall task for the Eagles. In the seven previous meetings, Lincoln County has produced four shutouts, limited Jenkins County to single digits in six of the seven matchups and has won every game by 25 or more points with an all-time scoring margin of 251-25 (32.28 average margin of victory).

Outside of the top 10 showdown between Lincoln County and Jenkins County, the most intriguing matchups will be Pelham opening its season against Class A Div. I’s Thomasville—which toppled Brooks County 35-7 last week and a battle between Irwin County and Class A Div. I’s Worth County
