Randolph-Clay and Mitchell County met on Thursday for their region openers and Mitchell County scored a 40-34 victory. Randolph-Clay was 1-1-1 heading into the matchup and that tie came during the Red Devils’ season opener against Alabama’s Cottonwood High School on Aug. 22. Lightning and weather delays impacted that game continuously until it was finally called at 14-14. The result was the state of Alabama’s first official tie game since 2012 when Russell County and Northside (Columbus) also ended in a 14-14 tie. Randolph-Clay dropped a 17-14 game to Columbus the following week and then had a 50-6 victory over Calhoun County last Friday to close out its region slate.
Mitchell County defeated Lanier County 28-14 in its season opener and then had its Aug. 22 matchup with Dooly County postponed due to weather. The Eagles fell 18-12 to Turner County and 21-6 to Clinch County to close out non-region play with a 1-2 record. Early County and Terrell County are also going to meet in region action this week. For Early County, the Bobcats defeated Miller County 41-17 to improve to 1-0 in region play last week. Terrell County is yet to start its region slate and will try to avenge last year’s 40-0 loss to the Bobcats. Baconton Charter (Aucilla Christian, FL), Calhoun County (Southwest Georgia Academy), Miller County (Appling County), Pelham (Monroe) and Southwest Georgia STEM (Calvary Christian) will all be on the road this week.
In Region 2, Clinch County, Charlton County, Turner County and Lanier County are all off on bye weeks. Atkinson County will host Central-Talbotton in non-region action, while Brooks County (at Pierce County) and Irwin County (vs. Cook) face ranked opponents with an opportunity to shift the polls this week. Brooks county defeated Fitzgerald 21-3 last week for its first win of the season and Irwin County defeated Dooly County 21-12 last week for its first win of the year.
The biggest matchup in Region 3 will be ECI at Bryan County. Both teams are 2-0 in the region standings and the result will have a major impact to the playoff seeding. Last year, ECI earned the No. 4 seed and Bryan County would’ve reached the postseason if not for its 26-12 loss to the Bulldogs. Undefeated Hawkinsville is off on a bye this week and will open up Region 4 action next Friday against Wheeler County on the road. Wheeler County is also 4-0 heading into Week 6 and will take on winless Dooly County tonight to open its region schedule. There are two more region games with Montgomery County at Telfair County and Wilcox County at Treutlen. Last year, Telfair County dominated 47-7 against Montgomery County and Wilcox County cruised past Treutlen 36-7.
There are just two matchups in Region 5 as undefeated Johnson County, Hancock Central, Georgia Military Prep and Wilkinson County are off on bye weeks. Glascock County will host Warren County and Twiggs County will travel to Greene County. Crawford County is hosting Schley County in Region 6 and Schley County won this matchup 54-21 last year. Chapel Hill at Manchester and Mt. Zion-Carroll at Pike County occupy the two matchups in Region 7, while Greenville, Bowdon and Trion will be off on byes. Finally, Lincoln County will look to improve to 5-0 against Silver Bluff.
