Class A Div. II Blog: Week 1 results shakeup storylines

Week 1 of the 2025 season was a rough start for the top 10 in Class A Div. II. No. 4 ranked Lincoln County and No. 6 Metter observed byes and just two of the other eight teams in the poll found win column. No. 8 Clinch County defeated Bacon County 25-6 and No. 9 Jenkins County beat Glascock County 28-7. All four of the top 5 ranked teams that played Week 1 suffered defeats and all of the losses were by double digits. No. 7 Trion dropped a 23-12 game to Gordon Lee after winning that same matchup last season 30-6 and No. 10 Early County fell short 24-20 to Westover.

Not only did No. 1 Bowdon, No. 2 Brooks County, No. 3 Irwin County and No. 5 Manchester all drop their season openers on Friday, but the margin of defeat was lopsided in the majority of the matchups. Three-time defending state champion Bowdon was defeated 26-0 by Fellowship Christian. Last season, Bowdon also lost this matchup on a late two-point conversion 36-35. The elephant in the room this time around, however, is the fact that Bowdon was held scoreless after scoring 41.2 ppg just a season ago. The 26-0 loss to the Paladins was the first time that Bowdon has been shutout since 2019 when Bowdon lost 31-0 to Darlington. Last year’s state finalist Brooks County dropped its opener to Thomasville 35-7. The Trojans also lost to the Bulldogs last year 35-12, but that was in head coach Josh McFather’s debut and expectations were a closer contest this year.

With Irwin County, the Indians went from a 19-13 win over Fitzgerald last season to a massive 48-0 loss on Friday to the Purple Hurricanes. That was the widest margin in the series in the last 19 matchups going back to a 48-0 loss in 2009. It was a phenomenal debut for Fitzgerald’s new head coach Wesley Tankersley—who came over from Stephens County, but a surprising result for the Indians. After falling behind 14-0 at the half, Irwin County was outscored 34-0 in the final two frames.

No. 5 Manchester’s 17-6 loss to Harris County is less concerning as the Blue Devils fell short to the Tigers similarly last year 17-8. Region 3 and Region 4 were the only two regions that went above .500 this week. Region 6 was 0-6 and Region 8 was 0-3, while Region 1 (2-3), Region 2 (2-4), Region 7 (2-3) and Region 5 (1-4) were all below .500.
