Class A Div. II Blog: Week 4 Primer, Region 3 kicks off

Class A Div. II is similar to Class 4A-7A when it comes to seeding the state playoffs strictly based off of the final region standings and Region 3 will have four region openers/matchups to watch for Friday night. Screven County is the only team out of the nine-team conference that is still unbeaten and there are five teams with 1-1 records and a trio still searching for their first wins of the season.

Screven County (2-0) will host Claxton (0-2) in a rematch of last year’s 36-12 victory. Neither Screven County nor Claxton were able to make the postseason last year and so this matchup will be critical for achieving that goal. Last year’s region champion Metter is off on a bye this week and will take on Savannah on the road next Friday night.

Jenkins County earned the No. 2 seed last year and ultimately had the most successful playoff run out of the four qualifying teams—making it all the way to the quarterfinals with a 10-3 record and falling to Brooks County. The Eagles will open up region play at home against Portal in a rematch of last year’s 48-19 victory. McIntosh County Academy was the No. 3 seed last year and ECI earned the No. 4 seed. Both finished 7-3 overall, but a 6-2 region record gave McIntosh County Academy the edge over ECI’s 5-3 region mark. The Buccaneers scored a 7-6 victory in last year’s region opener against the Bulldogs.  Finally, Bryan County will take on Savannah in a rematch of last year’s 28-0 victory.

Outside of the four Region 3 matchups, there are 33 more games to watch on the Week 4 slate. Region 6’s Macon County (0-3) and Region 7’s Manchester (0-2) will meet in a battle of winless teams and could provide a spark to the winning team as they prepare for their respective regions.
