Class A Div. II Blog: Wheeler County aims for historic 8-0 start

It’s a light Week 10 for Class A Div. II with just 18 total games. Baconton Charter at Terrell Academy and Turner County at St. Anne-Pacelli are the only two non-region games on the slate and all of Region 5 will be off on a bye this week. In Region 1, Mitchell County will go on the road to Miller County with an opportunity to set up a region title matchup with Early County next Friday. Seminole County is just one game back from Mitchell County and its only region loss came to Early County so the Indians are still in the hunt for a share of the region title, but Early County is the team that currently controls its own destiny. In Region 3, last week undefeated Screven County hosted Metter and ECI will played host to Portal. Screven County defeated Metter 27-7 to improve to 5-0 in region play and ECI scored a 41-14 win over Portal to move to 6-0 in region play.. ECI will not play Screven County until Oct. 31. Metter defeated Screven County 34-6 last year so this was a big turnaround win for Screven County.

Undefeated Wheeler County was off on a bye last week, but now has a huge matchup with host Telfair County. Last week, Telfair County visited Hawkinsville and was defeated 19-0. Last year, Telfair County swept its way to the Region 4 title, but is off to a 1-3 start this year with losses to Hawkinsville (19-0) Wilcox County (35-16) and Treutlen (15-13) and a narrow 24-21 win over Montgomery County. Telfair County had won four-straight games against Hawkinsville and the Red Devils have gotten off to an 0-2 region start after a 4-0 non-region result with its losses coming to Wheeler County (36-18) and Wilcox County (28-23). Wheeler County has never won a region title in its 60-year history and with a 7-0 record—the Bulldogs have already matched last year’s win total (7-4) and sits one win away from matching the most wins in program history that came in 1999 (8-4) and 1975 (8-2).

In Region 8, undefeated Lincoln County finally kicked off its region schedule with a road trip to Washington-Wilkes last week with a 42-7 victory. The Red Devils defeated Washington-Wilkes 34-0 last season and swept their way to the region title. Now, Lincoln County will host Lake Oconee Academy.
