Class A Div. II Blog: Wheeler County improves to 4-0 for first time since 1998

Wheeler County kicked off Week 5 on Thursday with a 30-22 victory over Atkinson County. This matchup pinned Region 4’s Wheeler County against Atkinson County—a team in Region 2 that is not participating in a region schedule this season. With the victory, Wheeler County improved to 4-0 and Atkinson County dropped its first game of the season and fell to 3-1. Darrian Roberts accounted for 160 of the Rebels’ 343 rushing yards in the loss. Wheeler County jumped out to a 22-8 lead in the first quarter and led 22-15 heading into the half. After a scoreless third quarter, both teams added touchdowns in the final frame. With the victory, Wheeler County is 4-0 for the first time since the 1998 season. The Bulldogs finished 7-4 last year and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2022. This season, the team will attempt to return to the playoffs and earn the first playoff win since the 1999 campaign. Wheeler County will open up Region 4 play next Friday at Dooly County.

There are two region matchups this week in Region 1 with playoff implications on the line. Early County will host Miller County and Pelham will travel to Seminole County. Early County won 26-9 over Miller County last year and ultimately earned the region title due to a 48-16 Week 11 victory over Mitchell County—which also had a 5-1 region finish. Peham is off to a tough 0-3 schedule, but can turn the season around this Friday night against Seminole County. Last season, Pelham earned a 9-6 victory and that win over Seminole County resulted in Pelham earning the No. 4 seed and the Indians missing out with an equal 3-3 region mark.

Brooks County (0-3), Irwin County (0-3) and Lanier County (0-3) are all looking for their first wins of the season this week. Brooks County will travel to Class A Div. I powerhouse Fitzgerald, Irwin County will visit Dooly County and Lanier County will host Bacon County. In Region 3, there are four region battles to watch for. The nine-team region kicked off region play last week with the exception of Metter—who will kickoff region play tonight at Savannah.

Crawford County travels to Macon County and Chattahoochee County visits Schley County tonight for Region 6 openers. In Region 7, Manchester’s seven-game win-streak against Spencer was snapped Thursday night as the Greenwave scored a 29-7 win.
