Despite an hours long rain delay that in the opening game of the high school football season, first-year head coach Jon Richt, son of former Georgia head coach Mark, is 1-0 after coaching his alma mater to a 40-17 victory against Class 2A No. 3 Callaway.

“I mean, ultimately, I'm proud of our guys,” Richt said. “They did a great job competing, great job staying in the right mindset, no matter what was going on. There were a lot of things thrown at them, from the rain to being down a halftime to the penalties.”

Prince Avenue, ranked No. 1 in the Class A-3A Private rankings by Score Atlanta, was powered on the offensive side by a pair of dynamic juniors – three-star Virginia Tech-commit quarterback Ben Musser and four-star running back Andrew Beard.

Musser was 14-of-19 passing for 227 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 108 yards and a touchdown.

“He did a great job today,” Richt said of his junior quarterback. “He took a lot of different and made a big mistake before half, just with a dumb mistake. But then he rebounded and came back in the second half and made some big time plays for us to even be in the situation coming out of the (weather) break.”

Beard tallied 143 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries and caught six passes for 71 yards and a touchdown. Hudson Hill made two catches for 97 yards and the Wolverines’ other receiving touchdown.

Callaway enjoyed a 17-14 lead at the half after touchdown runs from junior running backs Christion Kennedy and DJ Mahone to go with a 41-yard field goal from Jayden Bailey.

Kell 44, South Paulding 21

It was worth the wait for the home team and after the 9:42 p.m. kickoff, Kell cruised to a 44-21 victory against South Paulding in the nightcap game of the opening day of the high school football season at the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic.

With the game ending just after midnight, Kell led 14-0 after the first quarter and 34-7 at the half. The Longhorns outgained South Paulding 536-120 and rushed for 348 yards on the evening.

Quarterback Kaleb Narcisse was 13-of-18 passing for 149 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Longhorns. Brayden Rouse had five catches for 85 yards and two touchdowns while Nat Agyemang and Quinterrius Gipson each had one touchdown reception. Gipson led the ground attack with 16 carries for 194 yards and two touchdowns.

Kade Wigginton had 11 carries for 32 yards and two touchdowns and Carter Canyon returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown for South Paulding.
