Lowndes junior Jayce Johnson will announce his commitment this Sunday, Aug. 3 and will lock-in his collegiate choice ahead of the 2025 season. Standing 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, Johnson was a defensive back early in his varsity career before taking over the quarterback duties and shining in the role. He can beat defenses with his arm and legs and is able to utilize his touch to connect on deep shots and layer the football over the stout defenses that the Vikings face on a weekly basis.

Johnson has skyrocketed as a recruit and is currently a four-star prospect and the No. 61 overall recruit in the Class of 2027. Additionally, he is the No. 7 rated overall prospect in the state in the 247sports rankings and is rated as high as the No. 3 quarterback in the Class of 2027 in the composite ratings with a 0.9777 score. With over 31 offers, Johnson is being recruited heavily by the likes of Florida State, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas A&M—which are all considered favorites to land him at the next level.

Andrew Ivins—the Director of Scouting at 247sports talked about the keys to Johnson’s development and stating that he “must keep progressing and embrace being a team’s X-factor, but should be viewed as one of the more promising signal callers in the 2026 cycle at this stage given the athletic tools and peaks on the game tape.”

Last season, Johnson led Lowndes to a 10-2 record and the second round of Georgia’s AAAAAA playoffs as a first-year starter. Finished sophomore season going 123-of-183 passing (67.2%) for 1,799 yards with 16 TD and 3 INT. Also carried the ball 79 times for 318 yards (4.0 YPC) and 3 TD.

As for his team, head coach Adam Carter believes that the strength of Lowndes is going to be their offense early in the season and an experienced offensive line will return to anchor the attack with Johnson commanding the unit.

“I think the biggest position group we have on our team this year coming off of this past season is our offensive line,” said Carter. “All seven of the guys that were on the field for us last year are back and then you have our quarterback that ended up pretty much starting about 70 percent of the games and played most of the snaps so those two specific groups are going to have to be the ones we look to early and then offensively in general that’s why I have four offensive guys sitting beside me because offense is going to have to lead us early on in the season for sure.”
