Region 6-5A is the only region in the state of Georgia that has five teams currently tied at the top of its standings heading into Week 9—making tonight’s results incredibly interesting. While the anticipated showdown between host River Ridge and defending Region 6 champion Sprayberry will be broadcast as the Drive for the GHSA State Title, the two teams that beat each of those teams will be squaring off. Woodstock was the team that defeated River Ridge to start region play, while Sequoyah served Sprayberry its only region loss.
Entering kickoff, the Maxwell Ratings have Woodstock as a 24-point underdog against Sequoyah. Woodstock’s third-year head coach Dan Devine has already brought the program back from the basement and that margin would’ve been wider these last seasons. Woodstock produced a 7-4 finish last year, which was its first winning season since 2017. After tonight’s home game against Sequoyah, Woodstock will visit Riverwood after a Week 10 bye and then will close out the regular season at home against Sprayberry.
When it comes to Woodstock’s two losses this season, both were incredibly close. The Wolverines fell 38-31 to rival Etowah in overtime Week 1 and then its only region loss came to Creekview 28-21. Sequoyah was 5-0 until its 28-21 loss to River Ridge and the Chiefs came off a bye week last Friday night and rebounded from the River Ridge game with a 32-0 win over Lassiter. Sequoyah will conclude its season with Pope and Creekview. If Sprayberry defeats River Ridge tonight, the biggest beneficiary could be Sequoyah due to their head-to-head advantage over Sprayberry.
