On a rainy Monday, the Region 2-5A champion Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets enjoyed their first practice in the school’s new indoor practice facility. The 80,000 square foot, 120-yard practice field is part of a larger, multi-million-dollar project set to be fully completed by the new year.
“The biggest thing is having a place to work no matter the unpredictable south Georgia weather. It gives us consistency,” head coach Justin Rogers said. “It takes a lot of work to have a successful football program from the players to the coaches to the members involved. This will give us a nice, enjoyable place to do that work. It is going to be super, super nice.”
Rogers has led Thomas County Central to a 47-3 record during his tenure. The Yellow Jackets are the top team in 5A in the latest Score Atlanta Football Rankings.
The project includes a new weight room, athlete cafeteria, band practice field, ROTC area, and a gymnastics room with a spring-loaded floor and jump pit. In addition, the project adds new locker rooms, meeting rooms, training rooms, and coaches’ offices for football, boys’ basketball, and girls’ basketball.
The indoor practice field will be the third practice field on campus, in addition to two full-length outdoor practice fields.
