Wayne County and head coach John Mohring have mutually agreed to part ways. Mohring’s tenure with the Yellow Jackets lasted just 15 games, during which the program went 1-14. The team has seen a sharp decline since the 2022 season. That year, under coach Jaybo Shaw, the Yellow Jackets went 10-3 and reached the Class 4A quarterfinals. In Shaw’s two seasons at the helm, the program went 17-7 and made the playoffs both years.
Since 2014, Wayne County has been a consistent contender, winning three region titles (2014, 2017-18) and missing the playoffs only twice during that span. While historically a strong program, the team is still searching for its first state championship since 1959. Despite competing in one of the toughest regions in Georgia, the Yellow Jackets job remains an attractive one.
