What’s the opening week of high school football without a bit of weather, some lightning delays and a few top-ranked missteps?

The good?

The top-ranked teams played to form, for the most part.

Grayson, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, waited through a nearly three-hour weather delay before outlasting No. 3 Collins Hill (the score was 48-3 in the fourth quarter as of 12:33 a.m.). Thomas County Central, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, defeated Monroe 56-7. North Oconee is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A and had no trouble with crosstown rival and Class 3A No. 9 Oconee County in a 41-0 victory.

Calhoun upended Creekview 28-3 to maintain its top-spot in Class 3A and Class 2A No. 1 Carver-Columbus moved past Whitewater 51-25. Thomasville is ranked atop Class 2A and defeated Class A-Division II No. 2 Brooks County 35-7.

The bad? It wasn’t a good showing for the active Top 5 in Class A-Division II.

Bowdon, the top-ranked team in Class A-Division II and three-time defending state champion, was held scoreless in a 26-0 loss to Class A-3A Private No. 6 Fellowship Christian. Brooks County – ranked No. 2 – fell to Thomasville and No. 3 Irwin County lost against Class A-Division I No. 4 Fitzgerald 48-0. Manchester, which was ranked No. 5 entering the opening week, lost to Harris County 17-6. Fourth-ranked Lincoln County opens its season next week against Jenkins County on the road.
