The 10th-ranked Hillgrove Hawks entered their matchup with No. 6 McEachern having given up just 13 points through seven games. The Indians passed that mark in the first half Friday night on the way to a 35-14 victory.

Freshman Ty Nolan made the most of a fourth-down conversion on McEachern’s opening drive, finding the end zone for a quick 7-0 lead and the first touchdown given up by the Hawks defense all season. A promising Hillgrove possession ended in a blocked field goal attempt in the second frame, and the Indians added another score just before the break.

The Hawks found some success in their running game in the second half, getting third-quarter touchdown runs from quarterback Donovan Mack and Jaiden Moore, but McEachern answered each time with a touchdown of its own, including a 1-yarder from Henry Pullen to reclaim a two-score lead midway through the fourth.

Now 8-0 for the first time since 2019, McEachern has just South Cobb and Osborne ahead on the regular schedule. Hillgrove, meanwhile, drops to 7-1 and will look to bounce back next week against Harrison.

DRIVE FOR THE GHSA STATE TITLE TV GAME (WATCH HERE): TOP-RANKED HUGHES PULLS AWAY FROM NORTHGATE IN SECOND HALF, REMAINS LAST UNBEATEN IN REGION 3-AAAAA WITH 40-5 WIN

The top-ranked team in Class 5A now stands alone atop the Region 3-AAAAA standings following an emphatic 40-5 Panthers win over visiting Northgate and Newnan’s upset of former unbeaten Lovejoy.

Hughes got off to a relatively quiet start, holding a narrow 6-5 lead late in the opening half before Xavier Tiller scored for the first time for a 13-5 edge at the break. The Panthers outscored the Vikings 27-0 in the third and fourth quarters, however, getting touchdowns from Tiller, Jamarion McKinney, Darnell Kelly and Omari Harris while allowing zero first downs on defense.

“Just got to clean up and execute a little better,” head coach Andrico Hines of his message to his players at halftime. “They had a great game plan, great coaching. Their kids played hard. They made it tough for us, but we came out and made some adjustments, and we were able to move the ball.”

The 8-0 Panthers will travel to Morrow and Lovejoy to wrap up the regular season, while 7-1 Northgate hosts Lovejoy and Dutchtown.
