In Friday night’s second-round matchup between the Gainesville Red Elephants and the Brunswick Pirates, before the conclusion of the game a fight broke out that led to the game being called in the third quarter. Players from both teams were involved, and any individual who participated is subject to punishment from the GHSA.
Gainesville, which led 42-0 at the time of the fight, is slated to face off against Langston Hughes next Friday in the Class 5A playoffs. However, the official game report has been submitted to the GHSA for further review with a decision slated to be announced early next week.
While the Brunswick Pirates season will end in the second round with an overall record of 9-3, the Gainesville Red Elephants, now 10-2 on the season, may face not just suspensions for multiple players but the possibility of elimination from the playoffs, which would give Langston Hughes a free pass into the semifinals.
More news following the incident is expected to be released by the GHSA on Monday, with a looming decision for one of Class 5A’s premier programs.
