The Drive for the GHSA State Title takes us to Grayson as the Rams take on Colquitt County in the second round of the Class 6A playyoffs. The Rams have arguably the most talented roster in Georgia, while Colquitt County has elite talent as well, surrounding star RB and four-star Jae Lamar with several other college prospects.
Grayson: Five-star LB and Texas commit Tyler Atkinson is the leader of a stout Grayson defense. Since two nail-biters against Rabun Gap-Nacoochee and Thompson (AL), the Grayson defense has allowed less than 7 ppg. Atkinson has racked up 77 tackles and 25 TFL’s this year. He has been locked in with the Longhorns since July. Tennessee has been going hard after Atkinson, but it would be a shocker if he does not end up a Longhorn on signing day.
Lining up at linebacker next to Atkinson is a fellow blue-chip prospect Anthony Davis Jr. Davis committed to Ole Miss in August, choosing the Rebels over Alabama and Michigan. Davis is still solid with his commitment despite rumors about Lane Kiffin leaving Oxford. Davis is third on his team 41 tackles and 12 TFL’s. He is just behind Eli Harris, who has 57 tackles and 16 TFL’s to his name. Harris is a 2027 LB prospect who is also trending towards Ole Miss.
On the offensive side of the ball, Grayson lost its star QB Travis Burgess in the first game of the year. Burgess is a four-star UNC commit. Despite his injury, 247 Sports still ranked Burgess as a top 100 player in America in their recent recruiting rankings update.
The main weapons for this Grayson passing attack are Jonathon Stafford Jr. and Dawson Quarterman, a pair of three-stars with college commitments. Quarterman leads the team with 44 catches, 716 yards, and eight touchdowns on the year. The three-star wideout committed to East Carolina in June, choosing the pirates over his 23 other offers, including Kentucky, Nebraska, Colorado, Syracuse, and West Virginia. Stafford Jr. is second on the Rams with 35 catches, 687 yards, and six touchdowns. He committed to Western Kentucky in June. Both Quarterman and Stafford have 24 college offers each.
Despite being senior-led, Grayson has impressive depth in the 2027 and 2028 classes. 2027 IOL Jordan Agbanoma and 2028 EDGE Elijah Tillman are both uncommitted four stars and rank as top five players at their respective positions. Agbanoma is 6-foot-3, 295 pounds and ranks as a top 10 player in Georgia with his college-ready size. At 6-foot-7, 210 pounds, Elijah Tillman is a top 50 player in America and a top five player in Georgia in the 2028 class
Colquitt County: The Packers have a star of their own in RB Jae Lamar. The senior is a top 15 running back in the 2026 class and a top 15 player in Georgia. He is a four-star committed to UGA. Despite officially visiting Auburn and Clemson, this recruitment was all Georgia. Lamar named Georgia his leader earlier this year before ultimately committing to the Bulldogs on June 25. Lamar had his best game of the year in Colquitt County’s round one win over Mill Creek. Lamar had a season high 162 yards and four touchdowns on the ground on just 14 carries.
On defense, the Packers have two guys with interesting recruitments. CB Ry’Sheed Fuller reopened his recruitment on November 18. Fuller backed off a commitment from Chattanooga. He recently picked up an offer from Missouri State. He also has offers from East Carolina and Samford, among others. Fuller has 40 solo tackles to go along with a team leading 3 INTs this year. LB/S Mckenzie Graham has 13 TFLs for Colquitt County this year, good for second on the team. Graham recently picked up offers from Appalachian State, Mississippi State, and Marshall. Graham has yet to commit to a school. Both Fuller are Graham are 2027 prospects.
News from around the state: Three-star Mill Creek EDGE Braxton Rembert flipped from Wake Forest to Ohio State. The flip came after Mill Creek finished their season with a loss to Colquitt County in the first-round of the playoffs. Ohio State picked up another commitment from a Peach State edge as Dre Quinn committed to the Buckeyes. Quinn has 62 tackles and 11 TFLs for Buford this year.
Three-star Buford QB Dayton Raiola decommitted from Nebraska. Dayton is the younger brother of Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola and son of former Cornhusker Dominic Raiola. The future of the QB position at Nebraska seems to be set for the foreseeable future, so this move is not shocking for the youngest Raiola.
Four-star Lee County WR Jaden Upshaw named his top 10 schools. Upshaw will focus on Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Texas A&M, USC, Michigan, FSU, Florida, Tennessee, and Syracuse moving forward. Upshaw did not play in Lee County’s first round victory against Sprayberry. He will be back in action this week as Lee County takes on Hughes in the second round. Upshaw ranks as the best WR in Georgia in the 2027 class.
