The Drive for the GHSA State Title takes us to Sprayberry as the Yellow Jackets host Lee County in a first-round playoff matchup. This game will be highlighted by elite talent on the outside for both squads.
Sprayberry has a pair of SEC commits in Jorden Edmonds and Kealan Jones. Edmonds is a five-star Alabama commit who projects as a CB in college. Jones is a three-star Georgia commit who will play safety in Athens. Despite projecting as defenders at the next level, Edmonds and Jones lead Sprayberry in all-purpose yards. These recruitments have been drama-free with both players locked in with their commitments.
Nobody has been able to match the talent that Sprayberry has on the outside. Lee County has a pair of blue-chip recruits that are up to the task. Lee County’s go-to pass catcher is four-star WR Jaden Upshaw. Upshaw is a 2027 recruit with 20 Power 4 offers. He is a top ten player in Georgia and a top 100 player nationally. Upshaw has eight touchdowns and 88 receiving yards per game for the Trojans this year. Miami and Texas A&M are early standouts in Upshaw’s recruitment.
On the other side of the ball, four-star CB Lasiah Jackson is the leading tackler for Lee County. Jackson is committed to Stanford, but Auburn has plenty of buzz in this recruitment. It appeared that Jackson would flip to the Tigers before the firing of Hugh Freeze. Jackson will now keep his options open while still being committed to Stanford. Jackson is a top 100 recruit in the nation. Unlike the duo at Sprayberry, Upshaw and Jackson do not play both ways, rather sticking to their main positions.
Another key defensive piece for Lee County is LB Gregory Batson. Last Friday, the 2027 four-star committed to Florida State. Batson is the Trojan’s second leading tackler behind Jackson. Batson will be tasked with slowing down a Sprayberry team that has rushed for 263.2 yards per game.
Other recruiting notes from around the state:
Langston Hughes three-star RB Qwantavius Wiggins flipped from FIU to Wisconsin. Wiggins is the second RB in this class for Wisconsin, along with Sandy Creek’s Amari Latimer. Latimer is still being heavily recruited by Miami, Ohio State, and Tennessee. Only time will tell if flipping Wiggins helps or hurts Wisconsin’s chances with Latimer.
2027 Douglas County four-star OT Joshua Sam-Epelle named his top 10 schools. Sam-Epelle will focus on Miami, South Carolina, Georgia, Nebraska, Tennessee, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia Tech, and Ole Miss moving forward. Of those schools, Tennessee and Georgia stand out early. At 6-foot-9, 340 pounds, Sam-Epelle is one of the largest recruits in this class. 247 Sports ranks Sam-Epelle as a top 30 player and top five OT in the nation as well as a top three player in Georgia.
2027 Camden County four-star WR Sean Green named his top three schools. Green will choose between Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Georgia. Green has said several times that Florida State is his leader. It will be hard to count out the in-state schools, especially with FSU head coach Mike Norvell on the hot seat.
