The Newton Rams were outstanding Tuesday at the 2025 Brent Key/Corky Kell + Dave Hunter 7-on-7 Classic. The Rams were not defeated once in the tournament as they dominated their way to the championship.
Senior quarterback Deron Benson continued the momentum he got from a standout junior season performance where he threw for over 2,000 yards and added 26 touchdown passes to the stat sheet. Yesterday at Georgia Tech, Benson was working the deep ball a ton which resulted in the majority of Newton touchdowns.
He was doing the same during his junior season along with the utilization of play action with the running backs. He excels when his receivers run a slant, corner, or post route as he threw a lot of touchdown passes in those situations. Benson connected with Memphis-commit Andrew Leslie and South Carolina State-commit Malik Brightwell a ton last year. Leslie caught 14 touchdown passes with 678 receiving yards and Brightwell caught 10 with 1,035 receiving yards.
Benson was happy with how he and his teammates performed yesterday in the 7-on-7 tournament.
“It just felt great to connect with my guys”, he said after defeating Mill Creek in the championship game. “New receiving corps, new year, it just felt great.”
He looks forward to stepping on the field for his senior year as the Rams look to improve on last season’s performance where they went 7-5 and lost 24-10 to North Gwinnett in the second round of the playoffs.
“I feel great, feel like we can go win the championship”, Benson said.
Benson and the Rams will kick off the 2025 season at home against their Covington rival Eastside, marking the team’s third season under head coach Josh Skelton.
