There will be three storied Class 3A programs highlighting the opening of the high school football season in the 34th annual Georgia ConstructionCareers.com Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic.
Douglass-Atlanta, Cedar Grove and LaGrange each earned berths in the legendary four-day event that has kicked off the high school football season since the early 1990s.
Cedar Grove could be the interesting pick and – for the first time in a long time – will have to prove they deserve the selection in the event. The Saints play Therrell at 2 p.m. on August 15 at Buck Godfrey Stadium.
The Saints are coming off the worst season (3-7) for the program since 1994 when it finished 3-9. Cedar Grove finished 2020 3-5 but most losses were forfeits. This is the same Cedar Grove team that won five state championships under three different coaches from 2016 and 2018 (Jimmy Smith), 2019 (Miguel Patrick), 2021 and 2023 (John Adams). Rich Freeman took over the Cedar Grove program after Roderick Moore’s departure to become the program’s fifth coach since 2018.
Douglass is coming off an 8-4 record and second-round playoff appearance. The Astros will play host and Class 6A West Forsyth on August 14 at 8 p.m. Last season, Douglass upended then-No. 3 LaGrange 18-3 in the first game of the high school football season.
LaGrange – which lost in the semifinals to Jefferson 21-13 last season – will play at Rome’s historic Barron Stadium on August 15 against Class 4A Cass. The Grangers joined Class 3A last season after reclassification and finished with a 10-4 record.
