Savannah Country Day has announced that it will be leaving the GHSA after the 2025-26 school year for the GIAA. The Hornets are the latest in a long line of schools to leave the GHSA following the introduction of the three-times multiplier for out-of-district students in 2022. They join programs such as First Presbyterian, Tattnall Square, and Riverside Military as schools that have departed since the change.

The program was one of four private schools in the Savannah area competing in the GHSA. Now, only three remain: Savannah Christian, Calvary Day, and Benedictine. The Hornets have been the odd team out among the group over the past several years. In the past eight seasons, they have had five head coaches. While they’ve still managed some success, making the playoffs six out of seven possible times, they’ve posted only one winning season in the past six years.

The Hornets will look to improve in the GIAA, but that may be easier said than done. The GIAA has proven to be just as competitive, if not more so, than many of the GHSA regions these schools previously played in. The one major advantage is that they’ll now face schools of similar size and resources. However, it may not be much of a step down in competition. Based on geography and current alignment, the Hornets will most likely be placed in the same district as John Milledge Academy, First Presbyterian, and Stratford Academy, all strong programs. This season, the Hornets are 2-6 and on track for their worst record since at least 2020. However, they will still qualify for the postseason, as every team advances to the A-3A private playoffs.

The next question is whether any of the other Savannah-area private schools will follow the Hornets’ lead. Other programs that left in 2022-23 tended to do so in groups. In Gainesville, both private schools, Lakeview Academy and Riverside Military, departed together, while in Macon, all of the private schools left the GHSA together.
