Class A Div. II Blog: Sweet Sixteen includes a pair of top 10 matchups

All five of Class A Div. II’s undefeated teams survived the first round of the playoffs and the matchups intensify in the Sweet Sixteen as the field narrows down. Region 2’s Clinch County was one of three teams out of the region that advanced in the first round—joining Region 3 and Region 8 as the only other regions to advance three teams. The Panthers improved to 11-0 with its 48-20 win over Chattahoochee County, but now have a tough second round clash with ECI. Clinch County and ECI are one of just two top 10 matchups this round with Clinch County at No. 2 and ECI at No. 10. Clinch County won the last meeting between the schools 44-21 in the second round of the 2019 playoffs and leads the all-time series 3-1. While Clinch County was impressive in its first round win over Chattahoochee County—ECI was also dominant—posting a 63-7 win over Georgia Military.

Undefeated Johnson County arguably has an even tougher second round opponent for its top 10 showdown with No. 5 ranked Brooks County. Johnson County is favored by just one point in the Maxwell projections—despite its 11-0 overall record and Brooks County’s 6-5 record. That is because Brooks County competed in the hardest-rated schedule in the classification—while Johnson County ran the table on the 48th hardest slate.

Eleven of the 16 first round matchups were first-ever meetings. There were not any No. 1 seeds that fell in the first round and Class A Div. II leads all classifications with the most undefeated teams left. In addition to Clinch County and Johnson County, Region 3’s Screven County, Region 4’s Wheeler County and Region 8’s Lincoln County are all undefeated heading into tonight. Wheeler County will host Warren County, Screven County will host Charlton County and No. 1 ranked Lincoln County will host Hawkinsville. Wheeler County is 0-1 all-time in the second round and made history last week with its first round win over Manchester. Warren County needed two overtimes to defeat Mitchell County 36-30. Charlton County is a 12-point underdog against No. 7 ranked Screven County—which was able to defeat Glascock County 48-0 last round. As for Hawkinsville—despite the team’s 24-21 win over a talented Trion team in the first round and 9-2 overall record—undefeated Lincoln County is still a 27-point favorite heading into kickoff.
