Daily Dive: Several championship softball brackets set; others to be decided Wednesday, Thursday

The GHSA softball tournament begins Oct. 29 at the Columbus Softball Complex and four brackets – 6A, 5A, 4A and A-Division II – have been set. Classes 2A, A-Division I and Private will continue their playoff bracket play Wednesday and Thursday.

In the state’s highest class, the opening round of the double-elimination championship bracket has been set and two of the best teams in the state – top-ranked Buford and No. 2 East Coweta – each advanced.

So did No. 7 Archer, Richmond Hill, North Paulding, Walton, No. 6 Brookwood and No. 8 North Cobb. In the first round in Columbus, East Coweta will open its tournament against Archer, Richmond Hill will play North Paulding, Walton will play Brookwood and North Cobb will face Buford.

The 5A championship is also set after two rounds of playoff play. Qualifying teams are No. 1 Loganville, No. 9 Veterans, No. 3 Effingham County, No. 2 Creekview, No. 5 Lassiter, No.4 South Effingham, No. 7 Houston County and Jackson County. In the first round in Columbus, Jackson will play Houston County, South Effingham will face Lassiter, Creekview will play South Effingham and Veterans will play Loganville.

In Class 4A, the teams which survived playoff play are No. 1 Eastside, Union Grove, Wayne County, No. 2 Harris County, No. 5 Kell, No. 3 Cartersville, No. 9 Central-Carroll and Pace Academy. In the first round in Columbus, Pace will face Central-Carroll, Cartersville will play Kell, Harris County will face Wayne County and Union Grove will meet Eastside.

In Class A Division I, top-ranked Irwin County, Wilcox County, Baconton Charter, No. 3 Emanuel County Institute, No. 4 Taylor County, No. 9 Trion, No. 2 Lanier County and No. 7 Wheeler County each advanced. In the first round in Columbus, Wheeler will play Lanier County, Trion will face Taylor County, Emanuel County Institute will play Baconton Charter and Irwin County will meet Wilcox County.
