Richmond Hill, Jefferson, Sequoyah and West Laurens unbeaten in opening at of GHSA slow-pitch softball championships

Richmond Hill will face Jefferson while Sequoyah will play West Laurens for berths in the semifinals of the winners bracket after the first day of the GHSA Slow Pitch Softball Championship at Twin Creeks Park in Woodstock Wednesday.

West Laurens, the 2023 and 2000 champion, beat Cherokee 9-1 and Haralson County 10-0 to earn the quarterfinals berth. Sequoyah defeated Groves 22-0 and Franklin County 9-1 to earn the berth. Richmond Hill upended Woodstock 17-1 and Elbert County 1-0 in the first two rounds and is trying for the programs first-ever title and the 2000 champion, Jefferson, stands in the way. The Dragons defeated North Oconee 19-0 and defending champion Creekview 13-9 to advance.

In the opening rounds of the losers bracket in the double-elimination tournament, Colquitt County beat Woodstock 14-4 and will face three-time champion Haralson County in the second round. North Oconee upended Savannah 22-2 to play Franklin County. East Laurens moved past Groves 26-0 and will need that offensive firepower to handle defending champion Creekview in the second round. Hart County, the 2021 champion, remains alive after beating Cherokee 12-8 and will play against Elbert County in the second round.

The quarterfinal games are at 11:30 a.m. Thursday and the semifinals are at 1 p.m. to set up the championship series, which starts at 5:30 p.m. with a possible if game scheduled for 7 p.m. The losers bracket will begin its four-round trek at 11:30 a.m. with games at 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., which will place a team in the title series.
