Class A Div. II Blog: Early County looks to avenge Seminole County loss in key region showdown

Class A Division II will have 29 total matchups this Friday night and 21 of the 29 will be region games. In Region 1, Seminole County is traveling to Early County in what is deemed one of the top matchups regardless of classification this week. Seminole County won 28-12 last year, but will have to go on the road this time around. Additionally, last year’s result snapped an eight-game win-streak by Early County in the series. What happened after that result was the bigger storyline as Early County rebounded to win the region title and Seminole County ultimately missed out on the postseason with a 6-4 record. Both teams have plenty motivating them heading into kickoff with Early County looking to avenge last year’s defeat and Seminole County striving to make its return to the playoffs out of this crowded region. Randolph-Clay at Pelham and Terrell County at Miller County will also play into the region battle. Last year, Pelham won 30-20 and scored a 42-0 victory.  

Region 2 kicks off region play this week with a trio of intriguing openers. Undefeated Clinch County (5-0) will host Irwin County---which is 1-4 for the first time since. Last year, Clinch County won 34-28 to make the all-time series 25-24-1 in Irwin County’s favor. The 1-4 record by Irwin County this year is the worst start to the season since 2010.

In Region 3, two teams with unbeaten region records will meet with host Emanuel County Institute and Metter. ECI improved to 3-0 in region play last Friday in its 30-12 win over Bryan County. This game was pushed back to the final week of the season last year and Metter scored a 28-10 home victory. Additionally, ECI opened last year 0-2 in region play and had to win five-straight before its loss to Metter to earn the No. 4 seed. This year, the Bulldogs could position themselves to capture their first region title since 2017 with a victory.

Treutlen is off on a bye this week in Region 4 ahead of next week’s trip to defending region champion Telfair County. This Friday offers a trio of other matchups with Dooly County at Montgomery County, Hawkinsville at Wheeler County and Telfair County at Wilcox County. Johnson County is one of just six remaining undefeated teams in Class A Div. II and will face a tough matchup tonight with visiting Hancock Central to open up Region 5 play. Last year, Johnson County won this matchup 28-6 and went on to win its third-straight region crown. The Trojans have won 18-straight region games dating back to its last loss to Wheeler County on Oct. 15 of the 2021 season.

Macon County’s 44-29 win over Schley County last season ultimately gave the Bulldogs the region title and last year’s top two Region 6 finishers will square off with 2-0 region starts tonight in what could be another de facto region title matchup. Trion will host Manchester and Greenville will travel to Mt. Zion-Carroll in Region 7 and each game is critical for playoff seeding in this small five-team region. In Region 8, Lake Oconee Academy, Warren County and Washington-Wilkes are off on bye weeks and will be kicking off region play next week. The other three teams in this region will take on non-region competition this week with Greene County hosting Miller Grove, undefeated Lincoln County hosting South Carolina’s Strom Thurmond High School and 3-2 Towns County travelling to South Carolina to take on the Dixie Hornets.
