Class A Div. II Blog: Newly-ranked ECI scores first shutout victory since 2019

Class A Div. II enters Week 8 of the season with 28 total games and 23 region matchups on the slate. The first of those region games was played Thursday night and saw newly-ranked Emanuel County Institute (5-2, 5-0) grow its win-streak to 5-straight and score a 37-0 victory over Savannah. With the victory, the Bulldogs produced their first shutout since the 2019 season (36-0 vs. Portal) and first region shutout since 2018. ECI will take on Portal next week and will then have a bye before closing out the year against Claxton and Screven County. With wins over Jenkins County and Bryan County already on ECI’s resume, the Bulldogs and Screven County are the only remaining teams in Region 3 without region defeats. Screven County will be facing off with host Bryan County tonight in a rematch of last year’s 28-14 loss to the Redskins. ECI’s last region title came in 2017.

In Region 2, undefeated Clinch County will travel to Charlton County with a chance to improve to 7-0 for the first time since 2010. The Panthers are coming off a 61-14 victory over Irwin County last week and defeated Charlton County 51-37 last season.

Wheeler County is 6-0 for the first time since 1998 and will travel to Montgomery County tonight with an opportunity to reach 7-0 for the first time in the school’s 60-year history. Last season, Wheeler County took this matchup 64-48. Region 5’s Johnson County joins Clinch County, Screven County, Wheeler County and Lincoln County as the five remaining undefeated teams in Class A Div. II and will host winless Twiggs County tonight.

In Region 6, Schley County can take sole possession of the region standings as the Wildcats travel to Taylor County tonight. Last year, Schley County edged Taylor County 26-20 in this matchup. All eyes will be on three-time defending state champion Bowdon as the Red Devils travel to rival Manchester for a pivotal region battle. In Region 8, undefeated Lincoln County is off this week and will open up region play next week with a trip to Washington-Wilkes
