Class A Div. II Blog: Region 2 race tightens up

The Week 7 Baseball Rankings did not experience any significant shifts in terms of positioning, but the top of the poll once again reflected the competitiveness in Region 2. In the latest poll, Region 2 occupies three of the top 4 spots in the rankings with Lanier County at No. 1, Irwin County at no. 2 and Charlton County at No. 4. Region 1s Baconton Charter sits at No. 2 this week. Out of the three Region 2 teams at the top of the poll, all of them are 11-2 in region play heading into the backstretch of the season.

Todays blog breaks down the current landscape in Class A Div. II. Sitting at the top of the poll is No. 1 Lanier County. The Bulldogs have won five-straight games and are at the top of the Region 2 standings after earning series wins over Charlton County and Irwin County. Lanier County took 2-of-3 games in both those series and then swept Echols County and Atkinson County. Earlier this week, Lanier County scored a 12-0 win over Turner County and the team will conclude that series at home tonight with a double header. Lanier County will have two more region series that are three games each on the slate with Clinch County and Brooks County. Its also worth pointing out that Lanier County will own the tie-breaker over both Irwin County and Charlton County after taking those series.

At No. 2, Baconton Charter has tallied an 18-1 start with nine-straight wins and a flawless 11-0 Region 1 mark. The Blazers have a road-trip to Deerfield-Winsor Friday night and then two region games against Miller County next Monday and Wednesday. Miller County is 9-1 in Region 1 and could takeover the top of the region standings with a sweep over Baconton Charter, while the Blazers could potentially clinch the region by splitting the two games.

Irwin County has won four-straight since its three-game series against Lanier County and will take on Clinch County in a home double-header on Friday. The Indians opened the series against Clinch County on Tuesday with a 5-3 victory. At No. 4, Charlton County has won 13-straight and closes the regular season with its three-game series against Irwin County. Charlton County has a double-header at Atkinson County tonight and then has four non-region games and a three-game series with Echols County before its showdown with Irwin County.
