Week 9 sets the stage for 26 total matchups across Class A Div. II. The breakdown includes 18 region games with 17 on Friday and then one Saturday region matchup between Pelham and Mitchell County in Region 1. Region 7’s Trion (Westbrook Christian, AL) and Region 8’s Towns County (Spartanburg Christian) will face out-of-state opponents this week. Additionally, there is a cross-region intra-classification matchup with Region 2’s Atkinson County hosting Region 6’s Crawford County. Before we breakdown the region matchups, the other non-region games this week will be Pataula Charter vs. Scintilla Charter, Calhoun County at Southwest Georgia STEM and Greenville vs. Mount Vernon.
Starting in Region 1, Randolph-Clay and Terrell County will meet on Friday and then the Pelham at Mitchell County game kicks off on Saturday. Early County, Seminole County and Miller County will be off on byes this week. In Region 2, Clinch County is one of the four remaining undefeated teams left in Class A Div. II—joining Region 3’s Screven County, Region 4’s Wheeler County and Region 5’s Johnson County. Clinch has one of the toughest and high-stakes battles this Friday as it travels to Brooks County—which is also sitting at 2-0 in Region 2 play heading into kickoff. Charlton County will host Irwin County in a game that could spoil Irwin County’s playoff hopes after last week’s 33-17 loss to Turner County and then winless Lanier County will host Turner County.
In Region 3, undefeated Screven County will host Metter and ECI will play host to Portal. ECI is at the top of the region standings with a 5-0 region mark and already has a 34-6 win over Metter on its resume. ECI will not play Screven County until Oct. 31. Metter defeated Screven County 34-6 last year, but If Screven County—which was left out of the playoff picture last year—is able to defeat Metter on Friday then the Gamecocks could be playing ECI Week 12 for the Region 3 crown.
Undefeated Wheeler County is off on a bye this week, but the other six teams in Region 4 will have region battles ahead of next week’s matchup between Wheeler County and host Telfair County. This week, Telfair County will visit Hawkinsville. Wilcox County gets set to travel to Dooly County and Montgomery County travels to Treutlen. Last year, Telfair County swept its way to the Region 4 title, but is off to a 1-2 start this year with losses to Wilcox County (35-16) and Treutlen (15-13) and a narrow 24-21 win over Montgomery County. The Trojans will travel to Hawkinsville this Friday in a rematch of last year’s 36-14 victory. Telfair County has won four-straight games against Hawkinsville and the Red Devils have gotten off to an 0-2 region start after a 4-0 non-region result with its losses coming to Wheeler County (36-18) and Wilcox County (28-23). Wheeler County has never won a region title in its 60-year history and with a 7-0 record—the Bulldogs have already matched last year’s win total (7-4) and sits one win away from matching the most wins in program history that came in 1999 (8-4) and 1975 (8-2).
Undefeated Johnson County is joined at the top of the Region 5 standings by Georgia Military College and Wilkinson County—which the Trojans will host this Friday. Last year, Johnson County won this matchup 21-12 and swept its way to the region crown and it was Wilkinson County’s only region defeat. Georgia Military Prep—which was left out of the playoffs last season after falling in a three-way tie will have a major matchup with Hancock Central—looking to avenge last year’s 22-21 loss. The third Region 5 matchup will see Twiggs County travel to Glascock County.
In Region 6, Crawford County has its non-region game against visiting Atkinson County and then Schley County, Macon County, Chattahoochee County and Marion County will be off on bye weeks. The only region matchup will be Taylor County against visiting Central-Talbotton. Taylor County moved into first place in the standings last Friday with a huge 36-23 win over Schley County and Central-Talbotton is still searching for its first region victory after dropping a 55-6 loss to Chattahoochee County last week.
The focus in Region 7 centers around Mt. Zion-Carroll’s trip to Bowdon. Both teams control their own destiny in the remaining region slate, but Mt. Zion has tough battles with Bowdon this week and then a trip to Manchester to close the season. Bowdon defeated Manchester last week 49-13 and will close out the season with trips to Greenville and Trion. A Bowdon win over Mt. Zion—a team they defeated last season 49-0—would position the Red Devils to potentially play Trion Week 12 for the region title.
In Region 8, undefeated Lincoln County will finally kickoff its region schedule with a road trip to Washington-Wilkes. The Red Devils defeated Washington-Wilkes 34-0 last season and swept their way to the region title. Last week, Washington-Wilkes opened up region play with a 26-10 win over Lake Oconee Academy. Greene County—which finished as a No. 2 seed last year suffered a 48-7 loss to Warren County. Last season, Warren County fell to Greene County 28-14 and fell to the No. 3 seed and so this year’s lopsided win over the Tigers has placed Warren County at the top of the current standings.
