WEST FORSYTH HIGH SCHOOL -- Milton 12, Harris County 6

Milton entered the contest against Harris County as the No. 1-ranked team in Division 4 and the Eagles outlasted the Division 1 No. 2 Tiger 12-6 in overtime in the opening game of the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Flag Classic at West Forsyth.

A touchdown pass from senior quarterback Audrey Jensen to Alana Calhoun on fourth down to secure the victory. The Eagles ran three-straight run plays to get to the 1-foot line and with Harris County expecting another run, Jensen dropped back to pass and found a wide-open Calhoun in the endzone.

“A lot was going through my head (in the huddle),” said Calhoun, who was named the MRJ Sports Consulting Robbie Hunter MVP of the game. “It was stressful, and I kept thinking I have to make this play.”

Milton took a 6-0 lead with 5:52 left in the first quarter after a touchdown pass from Jensen to Alliyah Holmes. Late in the fourth quarter, Harris County tied the game with 8:09 left on a touchdown pass from Madalynn Cauley to Kaydence Jenkins.

“Our offense just had to execute and run routes,” Calhoun said. “Which we did, and it ended up winning us the game.”

Blessed Trinity 24, Greenbrier 13

Blessed Trinity opened the season ranked No. 2 in Division 4 and had little trouble against Division 2 No. 1 and defending Division 2 champion Greenbrier in the second game of the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Flag Classic.

The Titans opened with a touchdown pass from senior quarterback Addie Spak to junior Chelsea Lewis with 4:51 left in the first quarter. Spak was named the MRJ Sports Consulting Robbie Hunter MVP for her performance. With 8:28 left in the first half, Spak passed to senior Maggie Sullivan to push the lead to 12-0.

Spak passed to Sullivan with 4:20 left in the first half to extend the lead to 18-0 after several missed tackle attempts from Greenbrier. Spak connected with Hannah Daley with 3:30 led in the third quarter to cap scoring for the Titans.

Greenbrier got on the board early in the fourth quarter on a pass from senior Andersen Odom to senior receiver Lexi Lacey to cut into the lead 24-6. The Wolfpack capped scoring with 1:29 left in the game on a pass from Andersen to senior wide receiver Aaliyah Silver.

McEachern 13, Pace Academy 0

Defending champion and top-ranked Division 5 power McEachern relied on two fourth quarter touchdowns to outlast Division 4 No. 4 Pace Academy 12-0 in the penultimate game of the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Flag Classic.

Senior quarterback Ava Couzens scored the go-ahead touchdown on a designed quarterback run to the right side of the endzone with 7:20 left in the game. Couzens earned the MRJ Sports Consulting Robbie Hunter MVP award for her performance.

With two minutes left in the game, Couzens passed to senior receiver Exxence Hubbard, whose flag fell to the ground just before the goal line but was not pulled, to expand the margin and put the game away.

Pope 15, West Forsyth 8

Pope – the No. 2-ranked team in the newly minted Division 5 and the defending-champions from Division 3 – controlled each facet of the game to secure a season-opening 15-8 victory in the nightcap game of the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Flag Classic against host West Forsyth.

Pope’s defense recorded a safety midway through the first quarter to put the Greyhounds ahead 2-0 after a dropped kickoff pinned West Forsyth deep in their own territory.

Pope expanded the lead on a pass from senior quarterback Abbey Bensman to senior receiver Lily Joswick with 8 minutes left in the first quarter, putting the Greyhounds ahead 8-0 at the half.

Entering the fourth quarter nursing the 8-0 lead, Bensman passed to Joswick on fourth-and-goal right as she passed the goal line with 5:41 left in the game to put the Greyhounds ahead 15-0 after converting the extra-point play.

After the two-minute warning, West Forsyth scored on a pitch and pass play to senior Esther Westerby with 1:49 left in the game to cut into the lead but time ran out.
