The Gainesville girls advanced past Carver-Columbus in a 1-0 forfeit in the second round of the GHSA Flag Football playoffs after a fight occurred with nine minutes left in the third quarter with Gainesville trailing 6-0.
According to GHSA's Ernie Yarbrough, the Flag Football Coordinator, after referees met, it was decided that Carver did not have enough players to continue the contest and despite the suspension of four players involved in the scuffle, Gainesville would advance.
Carver was scrambling with the ball when a Gainesville player was blocked hard on the play and an ensuing scuffle turned into a larger fight when all of Carver’s bench cleared.
According to the NFHS Network footage, the Gainesville sideline and most of its players on the field stayed out of the conflict, resulting in a forfeit victory for Gainesville. The GHSA Flag Football brackets reflect a 1-0 victory for the Red Elephants.
