It has been five seasons since the GHSA sanctioned girls flag football, which featured two divisions at the time. Calvary Day won Division I and West Forsyth won Division 2 during the inaugural season in a minor but bright start for the sport.
After exponential growth each season, the GHSA first expanded girls flag football to three Divisions in 2021 and last season, it added Division 4. Now, following even more interest from around the state, Division 5 was added in April.
Each of the five Divisions began practicing Monday, beginning the trek toward the playoffs. Teams can begin playing games on September 30 and must complete their regular seasons by November 29.
The playoffs begin on December 4 for the first two rounds. The quarterfinals and semifinals are played on December 8 and the state championship games will take place from December 15-17 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, alongside the tackle football championships.
The defending champions entering this season are Southeast Bulloch (Division I), Greenbrier (Division 2), Pope (Division 3) and McEachern (Division 4). Southeast Bulloch has won four consecutive state championships while Greenbrier and Pope are each looking to defend their titles for the third-straight season. McEachern, a favorite in the state’s highest class (Division 5), earned its first-ever title last season.
A majority of flag football games are played Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and there are anywhere from 50-90 games each night. Beginning on September 30, Score Atlanta will track flag football scores each evening on the Prep Scoreboard.
